Time's Up...

As a kid, we used to dial a number on the phone to tell what time it was. The lady on the recording would say, "At the tone, General Telephone time will be..." It turns out that they have finally decided to discontinue that practice.

Not that I really mind. It's just that calling for the time on the phone hearkens back to a simpler time. It's nostalgic.

Here's the scoop from the LA Times:

It's the end of time, at least as far as AT&T is concerned.

The brief note in customers' bills hardly does justice to the momentousness of the decision. "Service withdrawal," it blandly declares. "Effective September 2007, Time of Day information service will be discontinued."

What that means is that people throughout Southern California will no longer be able to call 853-1212 to hear a woman's recorded voice state that "at the tone, Pacific Daylight Time will be . . ." with the recording automatically updating at 10-second intervals...

Indeed, time already has stopped in 48 other states, he said. California and Nevada are the two remaining holdouts..

In Northern California, the prefix for calling time is 767, or P-O-P on a telephone keypad. For decades, locals up there have dialed POPCORN any time they have had to reset their watches or reprogram electronic gadgets after a power failure...

To be sure, time marches on. Yet for many Californians, the looming demise of the "time lady," as she's come to be known, marks the end of a more genteelera, when we all had time to share...

Great New Restaurant

I had lunch at a great new restaurant yesterday, Rumba. Rumba is a Latin fusion restaurant. We were greeted by the chef ad owner, Chef Mario. I chose the tapas for lunch and enjoyed Ceviche, Pork Empanadas, and Sweet Potato and Chicken Bombas.

The others with me enjoyed other items from the tapas menus, including Camarones al Mojo (prawns in garlis), sauteed Bananas and Sweet Plaintains, Portobello Mushrroms (sauteed in Marsala wine), and Bombas with Plantain and Pork and Yuca and Shrimp.

The lunch started with fresh Yuca chips, served with a delicious creamy dip that had a bite - a nice departure from the traditional chips and salsa.

I wish I had brought my camera so that you could see not only how good the food looked, but how it was artfully presented. It was really a great lunch experience. My only criticism was that the service was a little slow, although I attribute that mainly to the fact that the restaurant is so new.

If you're in the Fresno area, give Rumba Latin Fusion a try (open every day except Monday for lunch and dinner).

Quote of the Day

"I sweat very easily. I can hold my hands together and count to 100 slowly and my hands will be very sweaty. My hair also sweats very easily."

It's like this...

It's like this:

Fishing is not about catching fish. It's about fishing. That's why they call it fishing, not catching.

A lot of life is not what happens to you, it is how you choose to react to what happens to you.

We are in the middle of a SNAFU with the school district right now about which school the oldest blonde boy is enrolled in. For some reason, he is enrolled in the Jr. High 3 miles down the road when he should be attending the new school that is opening one 300 feet from our house.

But, like all bureaucracies, it is not that easy. Our school district likes to redraw school boundary lines every ten minutes or so. after our son had moved for the third time, we were given the option to keep him at his school for 4th and 5th grade, rather than have him moved to a new school again.

For some reason, the district folks put him in the computer as staying the course to whatever Jr.High and High School he would then attend.

So now, we are in the process of getting him transferred to the school behind out house.

Only one problem... he is an athlete, and the transfer may affect his eligibility for this year and he may not get to compete.

All of this is very stupid, in my opinion. But rules are rules and we are in the process to appeal,.. yada yada yada....

Which brings me back to my original point. It's not about the situation. It's about how you respond to the situation.

More Summer Fun...

It's been a fun summer. It's hard to believe the boys are headed back to school in a couple of weeks (this year the youngest blonde boy is in school all day).

Here's the fun we had with our friends at the Happiest Place on Earth. We stayed at the Portofino Inn & Suites. It's a great place to stay with kids (but you have to pay for WiFi... bummer).

Cool...

I usually don't forward stuff like this, but it was kind of cool...
  1. Concentrate on the 4 small dots for 30-45 seconds.
  2. Look away and stare at a wall near you.
  3. You will see a circle of light developing.
  4. Blink a couple of times and see what you see...

Looking on the bright side...

Sometimes when you camp, it's all about having the right attitude.

Instead of thinking about the pit toilets as disgusting places filled with stench and flies...

You remember that there are hardly any flies and it smells a whole lot less when it's dark and cold (provided you can wait that long).

Oh yeah... and you never have to worry about clogging up the toilet. There's always that!

See... you just need to look on the bright side.
